Gelmer Funicular, Switzerland

Until 2017, the Gelmer Funicular was the steepest in all of Europe. That said, we know you’re probably wondering, “What in the world is a funicular?!” You’re not alone. It’s a type of cable railway in which tram-like vehicles move up and down a slope, counterbalancing each other, connected via cable.
Located in the Bern region of Switzerland, the Gelmer Funicular has an inclination of up to 106 percent. Although it was originally built to transport construction materials, today it’s open to adrenaline junkies and thrill seekers. (Clearly no average tourist is signing up for this.) In December 2017, the “steepest funicular” honor was stolen by another in Stoos, Switzerland, which climbs to 110 percent.
