Because nobles in past centuries often ate a more sugar-rich diet, their teeth were more likely to suffer from tooth-decay. In order to replace their teeth, they would seek out false teeth made from ivory or porcelain, but they would actually prefer real teeth in their dentures. And where would they get these from? Poor people were encouraged to sell their own healthy teeth for the rich to use.
