Making the Journey

In the pre-industrial United States, getting to California often meant traveling hundreds and thousands of miles through unknown, often rough terrain or braving the oft-choppy sea, and potential starvation was an issue. That was what awaited you after you’d taken out loans, mortgaged your property, or spent your life savings just to be able to afford to try to make the journey. How often did that gamble pay off?
