Konkan Railway, India

If it weren’t for a particularly enterprising Indian company, the Konkan Railway would’ve been a thing of dreams. The rail line runs along India’s western coast, between Mumbai and Mangalaru. Also known as the Monsoon Railway, the British believed the area surrounding the proposed line had too many bridges, tunnels, and environmental vulnerabilities to be built. To be precise, more than 2,000 bridges and almost 100 tunnels had to be factored into planning. Luckily, the Railway Ministry was up to the challenge, and the first train ran in 1998.
