Burma Railway, Thailand

Known as the Death Railway, the Burma Railway ran between Thailand and Burma (now called Myanmar). The train ride itself isn’t particularly noteworthy; it’s the rails themselves that were considered deadly due to their construction. During World War II, Japan advertised building the railway to potential workers, promising fair wages and housing; however, they didn’t attract enough workers that way. That’s when things took a turn. Needing a labor force, they resorted to using forced labor from Allied prisoners of war and Southeast Asian citizens. Not only were these slave laborers forced to build the railway, but more than 100,000 of them died while doing so. In fact, some consider the construction of the railway a Japanese war crime.
