These Are the Most Extreme, Dangerous Railways Around the World

Maeklong Railway, Thailand

Talk about a tight fit. Thailand’s Maeklong Railway runs right through the local market. No, literally. One of the largest fresh seafood markets in Thailand is situated on both sides of the Maeklong tracks. Whenever a train is approaching, the shops collapse their awnings and shop fronts so the train can squeeze through, then expand them again once it’s passed. Considering that the train runs 17 times a day, that’s a lot of setting up. Anyone who has ever worked retail will understand what a pain in the you-know-what that is. Luckily the train maxes out at about 30 miles per hour, so there’s little danger to the shopkeepers. The locals must not mind too much; the train started running in 1904 and its shown no signs of stopping anytime soon.
