Kuranda Scenic Railway, Queensland

Originally constructed in the late 1800s, the Kuranda Scenic Railway runs through 15 handmade tunnels and along 37 bridges, taking passengers more than 1,000 feet above sea level. The railway represents an extreme and impressive engineering feat. Roughly 3 million cubic meters of Earth had to be excavated to construct it, with many workers losing their lives in the process. Though the railway isn’t used for commuting purposes anymore, it is still in operation as a tourist attraction, winding through waterfalls and the rainforest almost every day of the year.
