Alaska – Jewel

You’ll remember Jewel Kilcher for ‘90s hit songs like “Who Will Save Your Soul” and “Hands.” The singer was actually born in Payson, Utah, but moved to Anchorage shortly after she was born. After her parents’ divorce in 1981, Jewel moved to the rural family homestead near Homer, Alaska. She recalls about her upbringing:

“We lived far from town. We had to walk two miles just to get to the saddle barn I was raised in … No running water, no heat – we had a coal stove and an outhouse and we mainly lived off of what we could kill or can.”
