Northern California Surge

A few years into the Gold Rush, as it became increasingly difficult to find easily accessible gold, a surge of prospectors could be found as far north as present-day Siskiyou, Shasta, and Trinity Counties. Once gold nuggets were discovered there, thousands of prospectors ventured farther north to these and other California counties.
The above photo shows early gold seekers, circa 1846, returning to Granville’s claim, a California gold mine, after dinner.
