Abandoned Aircraft: What Happens to Planes When They Retire?

Antonov An-2

The An-2 was an all-purpose plane that had a long life in Soviet Russia. They were manufactured from 1947 to 2001, a remarkable duration considering how aviation changed through the years.

This An-2 sits in a Bulgarian military base near the city of Dobrich. After the Cold War, most of Bulgaria’s military bases were closed down, and their military fleet was mostly cut for scrap metal. But these planes, used mainly for utility and agriculture, stayed in use for decades.
