Abandoned Aircraft: What Happens to Planes When They Retire?

Boeing B-52 Stratofortress

At the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in the Arizona desert, hundreds of B-52s sit in a giant airplane graveyard. Deserts are ideal for old planes because of the expanse of unused space, as well as the low humidity, which keeps the planes preserved.

B-52s were some of the best bombers produced during the Cold War, capable of flying 8,800 miles on one tank of fuel. They were initially equipped to drop nuclear bombs, but this proved unnecessary. In the Vietnam War they were tasked with bombing North Vietnamese camps, which were supposedly hidden in the countryside.
