Abandoned Aircraft: What Happens to Planes When They Retire?

MetroJet Fleet

Remember MetroJet? A small airline operated by US Airways, MetroJet was only in operation for three years, from 1998-2001. It was meant to be a cheaper alternative for air travel, but it never took off, losing money year after year. US Airways was bought by American Airlines in 2015, so even its parent company didn’t last much longer. The fleet, pictured above, sits in the Mojave Air & Space Port in Mojave, California.
