Abandoned Aircraft: What Happens to Planes When They Retire?

Douglas DC-7 and DC-4

The DC-4 and its cousin, the DC-7, were both commercial jets that ran back in the 1940s and 50s, respectively.

The DC-4 flew in World War II under the alternate name C-54 Skymaster. The DC-7 was one of the last propeller planes to fly commercially, as jet airliners were developed in the 1950s. The two planes pictured sit at the Gila River Memorial Airport in Arizona. That airport is now permanently closed.
