The Long List of Celebrities Who Have Run for Political Office

Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert is best known for his razor-sharp political commentary and sarcastic humor. He has used that to build a nationally recognized career as host of The Colbert Report and The Late Show. In 2006, he was the featured entertainer at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner, and was named one of the 100 Most Influential People according to Time magazine in 2012.

For someone who makes a career of skewering politics and politicians in both parties, Colbert can’t seem to stay away. He attempted to run for the presidency in 2008, seeking entry on South Carolina’s Democratic ballot. He paid the $2,500 fee (much cheaper than the $35,000 it would have cost to run in the Republican primary), but the South Carolina Democratic Party executive council denied his request to be on the ballot.
