Bad Hygiene Practices From the Past Thankfully No Longer in Use

Urine as an Antiseptic

According to recovered documents and books, in medieval times they used to use urine as an antiseptic. Some claim this isn’t a terrible idea because urine is sterile. However, that’s a very common misconception. Urine is not sterile and will contain plenty of bacteria that is found throughout our bodies, according to Popular Science. Bacterial counts will be lower in someone that is healthy, while someone with an infection will have assuredly have higher bacterial counts in their urine. So when people say it’s OK to drink your pee when lost in the woods, it’s really not a great idea and should just be a last resort.
