For centuries, having light skin was considered a sign of royalty and superiority, as women with darker skin meant they were outside working more. So if a woman wanted to appear to have lighter skin, she would sometimes use wheat flour, or unfortunately, she’d use lead-based paints that were available at the time. Of course, we now know that lead contains significant amounts of arsenic and is highly toxic to humans.
