Messerschmitt Bf 109

This Messerschmitt was found in the Mediterranean Sea near Marseille, France. As the primary fighter plane for the Luftwaffe, it dominated the skies for much of World War II. It had a range of functions, including bomber escort, reconnaissance, and fighting. The best German Messerschmitt pilot was Erich Hartmann, who shot down 352 Allied planes. The one pictured above was most likely shot down during the war, and it has remained in the sea ever since.
