Jamie Spears Steps Down From Britney’s Conservatorship
In recently released court documents, Britney Spears's father, Jamie, announced that he was willing to step down from his role as conservator “when the time is right” - following an orderly transition.
Britney’s lawyer had made a request to a Las Angeles judge to have her father removed from his role, to which the judge denied, and now Jamie’s legal team wants to help ensure that the transition from himself to another in charge of her conservatorship is smooth.
Throughout this trial, Jamie’s attorneys also denied his mistreatment of Britney, saying that he was “the best choice” to oversee her conservatorship. His decision to step down is largely due to a “public feud” not being in Britney’s best interests.
This long-going case began in 2008 after Britney had a public mental health crisis - since then her entire career has been in the hands of legal guardians. What might’ve been a necessary relationship at the time, has long since turned into an abusive relationship.
Jamie Spears had control over Britney’s estate and most other aspects of her life. The singer later sought to have her father dismissed from this role, and charged him with “conservatorship abuse.”
And that’s how the #FreeBritney campaign came to fruition; fans across the globe sought to help her regain control over her own affairs.
Her father Jamie, was initially in charge of both parts of her conservatorship (financial and personal) but stepped down from being her personal conservator in 2019 due to health reasons. Unfortunately, as a financial conservator, he has control over her estate and most other factors of her life.
Confidential records that were obtained by The New York Times show that the singer had voiced serious concerns about the conservatorship much earlier than what was reported. Additionally, the conservatorship appeared to have much stricter control over the different aspects of her life - ranging from who she was allowed to date to the color of her kitchen cabinets.
Up until recently, Britney had never spoken publicly about the conservatorship, or the legal battles surrounding it. Fans on social media believed that she was using her social media posts to send secret messages, like the following post she made after fans commented on asking her to wear a yellow outfit in her next post if she needed help.
But finally, earlier this year Britney was granted a hearing where she could finally address “the court directly” about her conservatorship. Marking the first time she would speak up and acknowledge the conservatorship, June 23 was a much anticipated day for fans and the media alike to see how everything played out.
During the hearing, the singer made a request for the judge to end the “abusive” conservatorship so that she could get married and have more children. “This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good… I deserve to have a life,” she said, speaking remotely.
And, now after months of tension and years of suffering, Britney is finally seeing the start of the results she’s been waiting for.
